LTO E-Bike Crackdown Day 1: 114 Checked, 8 Apprehended

The Land Transportation Office is now strictly stopping e-bikes and e-trikes from using major roads in Metro Manila starting January 2, 2026, checking 114 vehicles and 8 violators on the first day.

LTO Chief Markus Lacanilao said this is not a total ban on e-bikes and e-trikes, but a step to put safety first for everyone on the road. He explained that these vehicles are important for many people’s daily travel, especially in inner streets and communities, so the government does not want to take them away completely. Instead, the LTO is working to find and set clear alternative routes on local and barangay roads where e-bikes and e-trikes can still pass without disrupting traffic or risking serious accidents on major highways.

Lacanilao also stressed that the goal is to reduce crashes and confusion on national roads while still allowing e-bikes to serve short, local trips. Riders who continue to use banned roads can be stopped, fined, or have their units held, but the LTO also plans to inform and educate users so they know exactly where they are allowed and how to follow the rules.
