MDPPA’s Best Practices for Riding During the Wet Season in the Philippines

Listen to article

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA) has released some essential tips on how to prepare for riding during the rainy season in the Philippines. The rainy season, which started last June according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), poses various challenges and risks for riders, such as slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Invest in high-quality and appropriate gear

According to MDPPA, riders should invest in high-quality and appropriate gear to keep themselves dry and visible on the road. This includes a helmet with an anti-fog visor, a riding jacket, pants, shoes, and gloves, and reflectorized rain gear.

Check the condition of your motorcycle

Riders should also check the condition of their motorcycles before every ride using the pre-ride inspection checklist (T.C.L.O.C.S), which stands for tires and wheels, controls, lights and electricals, oil and fluid levels, chassis, and side stand.

Plan your route carefully and avoid hazardous areas

Moreover, riders should plan their route carefully and avoid hazardous areas that are prone to flooding, standing water, or poor drainage. They should also wear additional reflective gear or add reflective strips to their bikes to make themselves more visible to other road users.

Stay alert and focused while riding in heavy downpours

Additionally, riders should stay alert and focused while riding in heavy downpours and anticipate potential hazards. They should also follow the three fundamentals of safe riding: recognize, judge, and react accurately.

MDPPA is an association of motorcycle manufacturers in the Philippines that aims to promote safer roads in the country. The association said that following these tips can help riders enjoy a safe ride during the wet season.
