Motorcycle Sales Accelerate in the Philippines, Outpacing Regional Trends, Ranks 2nd in ASEAN

The Philippines recorded the second fastest growth in motor vehicle production in Southeast Asia from January to July 2024, with a 15.2% increase, according to data from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Automotive Federation (AAF). The country assembled 75,644 motor vehicles during this period, a significant jump from last year’s 65,664 units.

Myanmar led the region in production growth, with a staggering 262% increase, producing 1,352 units compared to just 374 in the same period last year. Malaysia also posted growth, with a 7.7% rise in vehicle output.

However, other ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, experienced declines in production, with drops of 18.6%, 17.3%, and 8.6%, respectively. Overall, motor vehicle production in ASEAN decreased by 12.2%, totaling 2.18 million units compared to 2.49 million units during the same period in 2023.

The Philippines also saw a 10.9% rise in motor vehicle sales, with 265,610 units sold from January to July, up from 239,501 units in 2023. This placed the country fourth in the region for sales growth, following Myanmar (44.7%), Singapore (34.2%), and ahead of Malaysia (7.2%).

Motorcycle and Scooter Production

While motor vehicle production grew, the Philippines saw a 1.8% decline in motorcycle and scooter production, with 777,319 units produced in the January to July period, down from 791,784 units the previous year. Similarly, Malaysia and Thailand also saw declines in motorcycle output by 11.5% and 13.1%, respectively, while Indonesia posted a modest 1.5% increase.

Motorcycle and Scooter Sales

In contrast to production, motorcycle and scooter sales in the Philippines climbed by 3.1% to 960,890 units, up from 932,220 units in 2023. Singapore and Indonesia also recorded growth in this segment, with increases of 3.6% and 2.5%, respectively.
