What if you could ride an e-scooter that can alert you of potential dangers, integrate with your car, and recognize your helmet? That’s what the Hilo One promises to deliver. The Hilo One is a new smart e-scooter from a British startup co-founded by former Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer. It was launched on June 11, 2023, at the Micromobility Conference in Amsterdam.
The Hilo One is not your ordinary e-scooter. It features a collision warning system that uses computer vision AI to detect obstacles and warn the rider through visual, audible, and sensory feedback in the handlebars. It also has full perimeter lighting that flashes when other commuters get too close. It even has an onboard chip that checks if you’re wearing a Unit 1 helmet for extra safety.
This scooter also boasts a sleek and innovative design that combines retro and futuristic elements. It has a large 31cm front wheel that can handle bumpy roads and a foldable frame that makes it easy to store and carry. It has twin 350W motors that can reach the regulatory speed limit of 25 km/h and a battery range of 40 km. It can be charged at home or through an in-car adapter.
But perhaps the most impressive feature of the Hilo One is its compatibility with Android Auto and EVs. The Hilo One can connect with your car’s infotainment system and display navigation and range information on both devices. It can also share information on charging stations and bidirectionally control both vehicles.
The Hilo One is the result of a collaboration between Hilo and Lotus Engineering, a British engineering consultancy that specializes in automotive design. The partnership aims to create a new category of smart e-scooters that can revolutionize urban mobility and reduce carbon emissions.
The Hilo One is now available for pre-order for €1,999 (~$2,150) on the Hilo website. The Hilo One is expected to enter other markets soon.
